Never Again. Dachau

Bavaria / Germany

Just a short drive outside of Munich is the small town Dachau, where you’ll find the KZ Dachau Memorial Site. It was the first, and served as a model for other Nazi concentration camps that followed. Not only were prisoners forced into hard labour, they were beaten, murdered, disease-ridden, starved, subject to medical experiments, and many other horrors. You can find out more about the camp here.

If you plan to visit the Memorial Site, be sure to give yourself lots of time. My friend and I had planned to stay there for 2 hours at most. We ended up staying for 4 hours. Take your time, nothing should be missed here.

I left the Memorial feeling I have no right to claim any real suffering in my life.

  1. I went there when I was in High School. It is a dark and heavy place, I never forgot it. We need to remember these things happened.

  2. Thank you for sharing this reminder that we all need to remember. As Edmund Burke stated ““Those who don’t know history are destined to repeat it.”

    • Thank you, Jerry. It certainly was. I had read a lot about the Holocaust and had seen movies, but actually being there was a different feeling. Thanks for the comment!

  3. Thanks for stopping by “Along the Way” and the like Thanks also for sharing your photos and adventures. The sculpture photos remind me of Yad Vashem, the Holocaust memorial in Israel. Yes…left there with the same feeling.

    • I just googled Yad Vashem; yes, you’re right, the sculptures look almost the same! It looks like a very interesting Memorial, thank you for sharing your experience.

  4. I was looking at the metal doors on the brick structures thinking they’re just like pizza ovens. I checked your link and confirmed that it’s the crematorium.
